‘I believe in America because in it we are free’ – American Travelogue 2008
I visited the USA for a 2 week family holiday, travelling around the east side of the country – from Philadelphia to Lock Haven to NYC. (Hardly adventurous and not exactly Route 66 but it was a vacation and I had the wife and 1.5 kids in tow!) What resulted was a selection of loosely connected photographs from Coney Island, to small town bars in Lock Haven to the cityscape of Manhattan and Ground Zero. The other photographs were all taken on my last morning in NYC I woke up at 5 am and panicked that I hadn’t got enough photographs, so I grabbed the camera and hit the streets and walked and photographed for about 3 hours. I had no real theme to what I photographed but I then saw a plaque with the words of 1940 Republican presidential candidate Wendell L Willkie saying ‘ I believe in America because in it we are free’…I thought that was a usable quote and could be loosely applied to most of the photographs and for the title of this slideshow.
