State Institutions for Children

I have been documenting State institutions for children across Eastern and Central Europe for the past ten years, including countries such as Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Republic, Bosnia and Ukraine.  The slideshow below is a selection of portraits and location photographs that hopefully sheds light on an ever increasing problem.  There are more children abandoned to state institutions as there were over 20 years ago when the collapse of communism exposed the conditions that millions of children had endured.
