Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone suffered through a gruesome, ten year civil war which ended in 2002.  I documented the stories of Sierra Leonians who were trying to rebuild their lives and feed and educate their children, in a country that is listed as one of the worlds poorest countries by the UN Development Index.  Stories and photographs ranged from Teenage mothers, to survivors of massacres, to orphans being looked in shelters as NGOs try to trace their families.

Kosovo

Post conflict Kosovans struggle to deal with the aftermath of war and the ‘birth’ of their new nation status. In the countryside Kosovan Albanian familes return to find their land and homes wrecked by the departing Serbs, Roma communities are guarded by NATO troops after retaliation attacks because they allegedly sided with the Serbs during the war.  In the cities of Prizren and Pristina, young women from broken families are in danger of being trafficked overseas are given emergency shelter by local NGO’s and throughout Kosovo more and more children are abandoned to institutions as their parents struggle to care them.

India

Commissioned by Help the Aged I travelled across India from Delhi, to Mumbai to Chennai to document the the daily struggles elderly people face in India’s slums and poorest neighbourhoods. I also visited Tamil Nadu to document how the HTA Tsunami appeal was being implemented to the local communities living by the coast. I travelled north of Delhi to Mathura – the birthplace and shrine town to Lord Krishna, who set up the Hari Krishna movement, there up to 2000 widows are cared for by the Krishnas. They are housed and fed and in return all the widows visit the temples 4 times a day to chant Hari Krishna for an hour at a time.

State Institutions for children in Eastern Europe and CIS

Over one million children exist in state institutions throughout Eastern Europe and CIS. For the past 9 years I have documented state institutiuons throughout Romania, Bulgaria, Bosnia, Ukraine, Moldova and the Czech Republic.  All commisions for this work has come from various NGO’s who are working to transform the system and get the children back to their families or in local family based solutions.
