Kosovo – 10 years Independent
This month, the Republic of Kosovo celebrates 10 years of independence after unilaterally declaring independence from Serbia in February 2008. Although Kosovo has since been recognised by the United States and major European Union countries, Serbia, backed by its powerful ally Russia, refuses to do so, as do most ethnic Serbs inside Kosovo. Chances of a lasting peace and reconciliation are next to nil as tensions and deep mistrust pervade.
These photos from Kosovo are a small selection of photos from my ‘Balkan Archive’ that were taken after the war in 2005. They were part of a documentary project on the post-conflict crisis that gripped Kosovo and the rest of the Balkans; missing persons, a wrecked economy, trauma, and family breakdown – all witnessed through the eyes of children.
I am currently looking into a potential project to revisit the children I photographed in the Balkans in the 90s / 00s to tell their stories today as adults. First stop would be Sarajevo – 22 years on from my first trip to the city…
